Pure Reason Revolution – Apprentice of the Universe

When I tell you they cite Pink Floyd as one of their influences, you won’t be surprised. Another band I found around early 2006, they’ve got this great astral sound that is easy to put into the background, mingling with conversations about the inverted spectrum problem.

Don’t mind the video. I really wanted to link Goshen’s Remains, but this song is also great.

Giggity

May 27, 2008

I have this problem. I’m very inappropriate. I have a difficult time self-censoring.

And my friends? Same problems.

Driving this weekend, and we’ve all had a bit to drink. The designated driver of the group, however, had only one drink, which for him is like a glass of water. Still, he speeds, and gets pulled over.

There are two weekends you don’t speed: Memorial Day and Labor Day. I tried to tell him this, but well.

Cop hauls him out of the car when he smells the alcohol. Why wouldn’t he smell alcohol? We had a car full of drunk people. The cop called for backup and started my friend on a sobriety test. Asks him to walk in a straight line.

Then he busts out the breathalyzer.

“I want you to blow into this, long and hard.”

My friend stares at the cop, briefly. I see the gears working in his mind and knew, knew in the depths of my soul, that he was about to get wildly inappropriate on this cop, and there wasn’t a damn thing I could do to stop it. After a pause he opened his mouth and spoke:

“That’s what she said.”

And so you don’t wonder, he blew a 0.01, which is far below the legal limit.

Office Mate: What are your colors?

MD: Um..?

OM: For the company lunch. What are your colors?

MD: I don’t understand the assignment.

OM: Sports team. They want us to wear the colors of our favorite sports team to the company lunch.

MD: Oh. Er. I guess I’d wear all black.

OM: What team is that?

MD: The All Blacks?

OM: Fair enough.

Ghost Buffalo – Hell Here

When I mentioned my trip to Colorado awhile back, these were the guys that I saw. They are a great live show and the lead singer is so adorable. I want to put her in my pocket.

I walked into this movie expecting a campy B-movie with an A-movie cast. And that was exactly what I got. And I couldn’t have been happier.

No spoilers to be found here. Go in expecting to be entertained for two hours and that’s precisely what will happen. PostureMoll’s response was “… What just happened?” which is entirely valid. Psychic KGB is a pretty out there. If you thought Nazis made for great pulp, you obviously missed the Red Scare.

As always, no one can make archeology sexy quite like Harrison Ford.

Highly recommended.

I know I just posted. Screw off. This is more important.

Shiny Toy Guns – You Are The One (acoustic)

I love this one and seek the mp3.

Shiny Toy Guns – Le Disko (acoustic)

Don’t feel so great about this one. Le Disko is a song that has only benefited from becoming progressively more industrial. Still, it’s the Shinies and I can’t help myself. I will say I love the intro guitar riff done acoustically, because it gives me vague reminiscence of Johny Cash’s cover of Personal Jesus.

Shiny Toy Guns – Rainy Monday (acoustic)

Debatable, but this could be my favorite of the lot.

Twitter

May 21, 2008

I gave myself a Twitter page, in early anticipation for ConSeason.

That is, to say, so people who don’t get to go to ComicCon or PAX can follow MD’s misadventures therein.

So, now I need to go to the Cingular store to upgrade my plan to unlimited text messages. I have a problem with texting (as I hate phone calls) and it will only get worse with this.

Of course, I don’t anticipate droves of people e-stalking me, but in the case that you wish to do so, it is now easier. You will see what an absolutely scintillating life I lead.

I like Chopin. I think it’s part of being Polish.

Chopinesque Kirby

I’d say it’s got too much bounce in its step to be Chopin-esque. Don’t get me wrong, Chopin isn’t a dour Slav, but his music has a bit more weight than what this remix gives. Also, I’m not saying this is a bad remix; actually, I love it, otherwise I wouldn’t be posting it. It brought back fond memories for me. I was a child vastly deprived of video games (my parents were assured it would rot my brain out of my ears — to be fair, they were right). I clung desperately to my GameBoy as my only source of gaming, beating Super Mario Land, Kirby’s Dreamland, Yoshi, and Dr Mario all into fine powders.

An excellent remix, though not quite what I think of when I think of Chopin.

(Can I tell you that finding a decent recording of Chopin’s “Revolutionary Etude” was a pain? Either people were driving the tempo into the ground or the errors sang out so boldly that I cringed. This was the best I could do.)

On the site, they point out Gershwin as a sound. I’m inclined to agree.

Best State Ever

Ultimate Frisbee: the sport only California could invent.

I love living in a state where grass stains after lunch are de rigeur.

The Cloud Room – Hey Now Now

Found these guys sometime in… 2006? Sure. I remember listening to them while chilling on benches in the FJC quad, waiting for folks to get out of class so we could go be a nuisance at locations of our choosing. That would probably put it sometime in early-to-mid 2006. I recall hearing they were blowing up all over the NYC hipster scene. I can’t confirm that, for many reasons, one of which is I’m a Californian. Still, great music to just kick back and bop your head to.
