Say what you will about Legend of Zelda: The Windwaker. Go ahead and fire off your “Zelda? More like Celda” jokes. Call it the “kiddie” game. I’ll wait.

Right. This is an absolutely incredible remix and you should consider yourself pleased that it occurred.

Darkesword – Ancient Hero

I can’t talk about this too much because once I start breaking it down I won’t stop. It has a wonderful flow, direction, build, changes in feeling as you go along yet you are always aware that you’re listening to the same song. It has a very epic feel, regal, sprawling yet simple. Its structure really ties me to the game. It opens simply, with small, sweet notes, awaking from a sleep, much as the game does; and it ends the same way, as the game always does. In between the two, you have this grand aural journey that drags you across many lands, and in the end leaves you much changed but much the same.

Good stuff.

  1. Well, you did spell DarkeSword wrong pretty consistently, but I’m sure Shariq would appreciate your praise for “Ancient Hero” nonetheless. Thanks very much for the kind words, Morgan! Now hit that edit button. :-D

In my defense, I’m a little dyslexic and that’s not something the spellchecker would have nagged me for :)

  3. I’m just bustin’ chops. :-) “Ancient Hero” is probably Shariq’s most popular track in his ReMixing career; seeing your breakdown of how it connected with you and your time playing Wind Waker illustrates to me (yet again) how well DarkeSword put that piece together. I certainly hope some of our other OC ReMix conjure up such positive feelings as well!

I’ve been a long-standing fan of OCRemix. There is a long, long, long list of mixes I plan on pushing to the front of this blog (which isn’t as huge of an endorsement as I’d like it to be, considering my readership effectively consists of myself and my cat). I’m going to try and avoid doing too many game repeats (I do so love the Zelda) but we’ll see how that works out :)

But yeah, I remember hearing DarkeSword’s remix when it was still up for review and not yet kicking it among the other remixes. I knew it was gold then, and its quality hasn’t faded over the years.

By the by (if you don’t mind my asking) how’d you find out about this blog? Do you peruse the intertrons for any mention of anything relating to your site?

  5. Of course. I always enjoy reading comments about the site and thanking people for saying good things about it. We have so many listeners that aren’t regulars at our forums, and it’s been good letting them know that we love reading their comments. Whatever I can do to let an OCR fan know that their comments haven’t just been sent off into the void, I’m glad to do it!

Hey Morgan, glad you enjoyed my piece. I hope you’ve checked out my Twilight Princess remix too. :)
